Philadelphia Triathlon 2009

Hello Team! I just wanted to let you all know that I signed up for the Philly Tri-Olympic race. It isn't cheap, but I like the race itself, being so close to home and it is something to gauge myself from year to year.

Now that I signed up and shelled out the cash, I have something to start planning for. I am sure that you marathoners will have no problem, but for the rest of us...

Congratulations to those that ran on Sunday. It was wicked cold outside and I completely bow down in absolute admiration for your dedication. I, however, fixed a leaky toilet and re-potted three indoor plants. Enjoy your Thanksgiving celebrations.

Thanks for posting Chuck! I was just about to start a new thread called "Race Report."

Congrats to everyone yesterday! Dave - good job!! I can't believe you did the whole race. Now REST!!!

My family and the in-laws are coming over for Thanksgiving at my house this Thursday. Wish me luck!

As far as the triathlon goes, I'm torn. I don't feel like spending that kind of money! I need to train more, too. I slacked off last year and knocked off only 10 seconds of my time! I need more motivation! Ugh...

Anyway - I hope you are all having a good day!

I can't decide about Philly... it is just two weeks after Eagleman... in talking with Ken and others... doing the race shouldn't be a problem... it's a question of whether my body will feel good enough to truly 'race' and improve my time... it seems silly to pay that much money just to finish/complete. Decisions... decisions! =)

My goal is to decide by the weekend... pull the trigger and sign-up or not do it. I am deciding on a pre-halfiron race... and I am also planning on doing NJ State and Nation's... I am tossing around the idea of doing Savageman 70.3 with TNT...

Congrats again to Dave & Bernadette... I'm glad you were able to finish the race Dave after all that training despite the injury. I am using you as an inspiration since I found out today I have an IT band issue in my left knee... stupid marathon! Thankfully was able to make some adjustments to my training... here's hoping!!

I was just talking to Fran and I think I might be interested in doing Nations. Is registration open? (If open, not sold out yet?) When is it?

Nations Opens up on Dec. 1st and is in mid-Sept. I was going to use that race as the season ender.

Nation's is a GREAT triathlon... and even more exciting is the change to the course they made of 2009... the finish line and transition area are actually near each other... this past race they were a little over 1.5miles apart... not very cool! Thankfully enough people commented and they listened...

I highly recommend it!

Hello Tri-buddies - While I was driving Bernadette and my brother (Kevin) to the Philly Marathon on Sunday morning I decided to just run a couple of miles with Bernadette on the 8K course. I was planning to start the marathon, run off the course at Logan circle, then when Bernadette ran by I would join the 8K run back up the parkway and stop at Boat House Row until Bernadette returned to finish the run to the Art Museum. I started the marathon with Kevin and Ed (my running mentor) and before I new it we were turning onto Columbia Ave, along the river. I was running pain free and feeling good. I slowed my pace and changed my running style to not stress the left calf. Kevin and Ed stayed with me, we talked about many things as the miles passed. Before I knew it we were passing the Philadelphia Zoo, then onto the Philly Tri course around Belmont Plateau, down Black Rd, and back to the Art Museum to finish the first half of the marathon. My brother asked if I wanted to finish or continue to Manayunk. I was slowing but still feeling OK so I decided to go for it. We passed the start/finish just as the leaders were finishing. We turned right at Lloyd Hall then around and down Lemon Hill back onto Kelly Drive. When we hit the 15 mile mark my legs started to ache. My muscles were telling me that the change to my running style was not appreciated. The trek to Manayunk and back required focus and perseverance. My brother was keeping me up to date on our progress with data from his Garmin watch. I skipped the free beer in Manayunk but gobbled down three chocolate chip brownies. After the turn around at the Green Street bridge ever step was now taken me closer to the finish, but my pace had dropped to 12/13 minute miles. At mile 22 my brother said if I was able to hold the 13 mile pace I had a chance to finish under 5 hours. I did not think I could hold the pace so I stated running faster. I completed the next three miles in 30 minutes. We were now approaching Boat House row but my legs started to cramp. I was now paying for the increased speed. The final 1.2 miles was a mixed feeling of pain and accomplishment. I finished in 4:51:27. Not bad after hurting my leg just two weeks ago.

Bernadette finished her race at 1:15:15. Her longest run ever. Great job Babe!!!

This marathon was my brother's 24th. He celebrated with a person record. The longest time he ever spent on a marathon course. He usually finishes around 3:20.

Dave - you tell great stories! I'm welling up. Congratulations on finishing! It's really not about your finishing time when it comes to a marathon. I think just finishing is a feat in itself. Way to go!

Bernadette! Fabulous job!

So - I just got the email for Nations Tri that USAT members can register early! 6 days before it opens to the public. I need to seriously consider it!

I updated the Events list on the blog to remove the 2008 events and enter in the 2009. I don't know if we had this set up for 2008, but I set it up so that if you click on the event it goes to the event's webpage.

Some of us have more time than others apparently! I didn't have it set up to be that sophisticated.

Hey Folks - totally not triathlon related - but I am having a holiday open house at my house on Sunday, Dec. 7th from noon to 3 pm. Come over and do some holiday shopping from your seat! Yes, it's cash & grab time for the Longaberger items I am trying to sell. I also have other cute Christmas crafts and holiday items. I'll be sending an email soon, too. Chuck - I already know your response. Sorry you'll miss it! I hope it's not too cold for you at Heinz Field that night!
