2 minutes and 20 seconds on CBS3.com!

Hey gang - they aired the weight loss segment last night. It's actually pretty funny! You can check it out on CBS3.com/Health. Click on the video of an arm getting measured (that's mine!)...Or you can try the link:

Hey gang - I also have to tell you that the Jingle Bell Run was a great 5K. They had a decent little expo before the race. A pancake breakfast after the race. And for a 5K, it was a challenging course. There were some nice downhill parts but the last half mile or so was uphill.

I'm excited, though...since I've been doing speed work with my personal trainer (Yassya - who you'll see in the video) I have been running faster. My 10 or 11 minute mile is now under 10 minutes! My first two miles were 9:46 and 9:30. The last one was 10:15 (uphill). And then I sprinted the last 1/10 of a mile at an 8:30 speed!

You should put this 5K on your race calendar for next year! I think we passed M Knight Shyamalan's house on the course, too!

Way to go Beth! Those times are awesome. I was impressed with the catch-n-throw situp.

My return to workouts has been delayed as I have a chest cold (courtesy of the girls!)for a week with no end in sight. It sucks!

I would be interested to know more about the speed workout.

It's actually pretty doable. We work in the cardio before, during, and at the end of the weight training...for only about 4 to 8 minutes at a time. I used to run (jog) at 5.5 to 6.0 (on a good day) for a long time but wasn't seeing any results. Here's a typical workout now:
2 minutes at 6.2 incline 0.
1 minute at 7.0.
1 minute at 7.5.
1 minute at 6.0.
Then we'll do weight training or abs. (It's actually better to do the cardio AFTER the weights from what I'm told.)
We make our way back to the treadmill and I'll do this:
1 minute at 8.0.
1 minute at 7.0.
2 minutes at 6.5.
That's pretty much it.

The fastest I've gone so far is 8.5 for 1 minute. Today we didn't do speed. Today we were only on the treadmill for 4 minutes in the beginning of the workout to get our heart rates up. At the end of the workout we ran for only 10 minutes. This time it was at the same speed.
2 minutes at your normal speed on incline 0.
1 minute at incline 1.
1 minute at incline 0.
1 minute at incline 2.
1 minute at incline 0.
1 minute at incline 3.
3 minutes at incline 0.

It doesn't sound bad but staying the same speed going uphill is tough. Today was the first day we tried that. The idea is to get your body away from what it's used to.

Congrats on both the 5K and your famous TV spot! =) Those times rock... despite dragging my heels and dreading the idea, I have added tempo/speed runs slowly to my half-marathon plan and it actually has been nice... 1) it breaks up the boring treadmill (I have only done the speed/tempo runs on the treadmill) and 2)makes my long runs (10+ miles) at normal speed (10:30-11:00) feel GREAT... which probably means I should run them faster... but that seems crazy!

Last week after swim practice speedy Ken offered to run the first 8.5 miles of my 11.5 mile run with me... no fun! He's fast! (and I KNOW he slowed down for me!)... thank god we ditched each other long before the 8.5

I think I am going to try your fun speed workout tomorrow instead of my tempo run... when I qualify for Boston... it will all because of you Beth! =)

FEEL BETTER CHUCK

Thanks Shannon! I still feel like crap.

I sent in my TNT mentor application for the Philly Tri. They are having a mentor meeting this evening at the LLS headquarters, but I have to head up to NYC and doubt that I will be home in time. I guess that I will soon see Dave and Shannon at the TNT training events. Anyone else?

Hey gang - I JUST registered for the TRI (Olympic distance) and I sent in my mentor application.

Chuck - They just rescheduled the mentoring meeting for Tues, Dec 18th at 6:30 pm.

I hope you feel better!!

You don't sound too excited about either training or seeing folks Chuck... =)

Shannon said...

PS: it must be the training because I KNOW you are excited about seeing us all again! =)

Beth-did you sign up for the non-fundraising mentor? That is what I signed up for. Thanks for giving me the heads up on last night's cancellation. I saw the post and stayed in NYC for a little bit longer.

Shannon-Of course I am excited to see everybody. I am not that excited to drag my sorry behind to the pool early on Saturday mornings, however...

Shannon said...

I feel you on that... once Philly starts training... I realized I will be at the pool at 8am with St.A's and 9am with Philly (at least until the end of April)... getting to the pool at 9am now is tough already... I do have to say that mentoring is alot of fun... even with the paperwork... I am glad they restructured it a bit to make sure mentors actually do stuff and contact mentees every week (seems like that was not the case for every mentor last year with Philly)...

Beth said...

I agree, Shannon!

Yes, Chuck...I signed up to be a non-fundraising mentor. I can't ask my family and friends for money again...it's too soon.

I need to reschedule my dentist appt that is tomorrow so that I can make the mentoring meeting. I'm not looking forward to getting up early on Saturdays either, but it's a guaranteed workout...one I might not get otherwise!

See folks tomorrow @ the meeting... might be a couple minutes late... dropping those final papers off to put the semester to rest officially!! =)

Chuck W. said...

Shannon-Are you going to be a mentor for Philly Tri too?

Shannon said...

yes I am... I had mentioned to Amy that I could help out with Philly (not originally meaning mentoring, but just whatever... especially in the early stages since school/work is done for a long while)...but the opportunity to mentor came along... and since it has been a blast with St.A's (and they overlap quite a bit which will make it easy in a way)... I figured why not... also, it's an extra layer of training motivation.

I thought about fundraising, but since I already signed up for Philly before deciding to mentor... that's not going to happen (and to be honest... it is kinda nice not having the fundraising stress... though I have to say the St.A's folks are kicking some fundraising butt)

Chuck W. said...

Shannon-How many people are you mentoring for St. Ant's? Do they live in your area?

Shannon said...

I have 9 people right now... I have as many as 11 (injury and pregnancy knocked two out)... the people live all over... both inside Philly and in surrounding suburbs... because St.A's is a smaller team... and there are only 3 mentors... folks were assigned to us first by whether or not we attended the sign-up event they joined at and second, randomly! =) I have no idea how Amy plans to do it for Philly.
