Get your hands out of your who-who

Oh, the wonderful ramblings of my triathlete friends...just when I think that the weather is starting to turn warm, we have a day like today.

It was great to see everyone on Saturday at the pool and to begin preparations for the 2007 tri season. As frustrated as I felt in the pool, I was amazed at how well my legs felt running afterwards. It may have something to do with the running pants, as this was my first 2008 training purchase. I did get new shorts too, but will wait to break those out until the temps climb above 50.

When I did my spin class last thursday, my toes started to get numb when I was pedaling. Am I doing something wrong?

Of course, you know I'm going to be the first person to answer this question! Your shoes are probably too tight. Or you might be pointing your toes too much when you're pedaling. Did you notice either?

What do you mean, pointing my toes? That my toes were pointing down? I did not notice that but it doesn't mean that wasn't the case. I will relax the straps on my shoes tonight to see if that makes a difference.

Shannon-Are you put together buddy runs in Center City? Most of my mentoree's are from Philadelphia.

Beth said...

Well - your feet are supposed to be flat, parallel to the ground, as you push the pedal down and then you flex your foot and lead with your heel as you pull the pedal back up. I just know that you really don't want to angle your foot more to the floor, like you are pointing your toes toward the ground, because that's not proper form. Even though I KNOW this, it doesn't mean I DO this. I'm a big offender and always have to pay more attention to keeping my feet flat as I'm pushing the pedals down.

You want the straps of the pedal to be tight around your shoe so your foot doesn't come flying out but your laces might be too tight.

I sent my email to Danelle about Thursday. She's out of commission so I wanted to make sure her mentees knew of our joint buddy run.

Chuck, your email to your people was excellent. You are such a great mentor!

I will be doing Philly buddy runs soon... probably after this weekend... can't mess with the taper... let me know when you all are planning to run this week... I may join... and will pass info along to mentees

The plan is to run in Conshy on Thursday at 5pm for a quick 30 minute run. I have gotten one confirmation and Beth has gotten one too. I think that my confirmed mentoree, Lisa will be more than interested in talking to you ladies. She was peppering me with questions on Saturday about completion times.

Also, another of my mentorees suggested running at Valley Green in Chestnut Hill. Have you heard of it? Apparently it runs about 10 miles long into the city. I am going to look into it.

I used to do my long runs from Kelly Drive, near Falls Bridge, out to Valley Green and back. We turned it into 12 mile runs, though. It's a nice run. Not too many hills, and it's a path so it's not paved. It's shaded for the most part. There are bathrooms and a water fountain at Valley Green. The only thing about it is that I don't think it's marked so if you want to go less than 10 miles, you'll have to base it on time rather than distance.

There are other parking lots you can go to, as well. If you are on Ridge Pike going East toward the city and turn left onto Bells Mill Road, Forbidden Drive is at the bottom of the hill. There are parking lots with easy access to the path. I'm not sure what the distance is from that side of the path but I'm sure it's gotta be less than 5 miles to get to Valley Green. (There used to be a Friendly's near where you turn on Bells Mill.)

I know there is a way to get there from Chestnut Hill; I just never did it. I always came from the Manayunk/Roxborough side.

That would be a nice place to go once it gets hot and we need to do longer runs and want to stay in the shade.

Chuck, how was your spin class?

Thanks for the info. They show parking areas on a map for the park, but it is not easy to read. When I am heading down to that area, I am going to stop at the bike shop that is selling them so I can figure out a good parking area.

I did pay more attention to the angle of my feet last night and they did not fall asleep nearly as bad as the previous trip. I did notice that it got worse when I had to stand up vs. sitting down. I am not sure how you can not point your toes when you standing over the handlebars.

I don't look forward to today's workout. The Ambler Y, where the pool is, has a horrible exercise room. I am always fighting for equipment time as the after work crowd seem to be there for the social aspect only. There is only three bikes. Is this the same at LA Fitness or other gyms? There was a really great gym that I used to belong to but it doesn't have a pool.

I sent an email out to my mentees about the run on Thursday... if any plan on coming... I will let you guys know... I am planning on running as well... at least as of today! =) Starting next week I will plan some Philly buddy runs... I have run Valley Green and another park in Delaware County... thanks to folks on St.A's suggestions... good runs... nice change of pace.

Anyone going to fundraising fair on Wed?

Beth said...

I really don't feel like hauling my a$$ down to the airport in this weather! Not one of my mentees said they were going either. I think there should be a rain date.

Shannon - which tri did you do the morning of my BBQ? Was it Kings Grant?

Beth said...

By the way - I updated the event list.

Shannon said...

Yes it was Kings Grant... I really liked it! I agree about the weather!! I want to waste $ at Target getting ready for Florida... but can't if we have the meeting... UGH!! Here's hoping it's too wet outside

Beth said...

Shannon - did you sign up for either the Women's Tri or SheRox yet? Was the Women's Tri $85 last year? That's the early bird price!

Chuck W. said...

Since I did not go to the call bank night, I think that I should head down there tonight. I don't know who from my group is going down, but hopefully enough people come to make it worthwhile. Which DQ event are you all planning on doing prior to the Philly Tri.

Beth said...

I think I'm going to do Hammonton again. There was plenty of time in between but not too much...so that you remembered what you were doing.

Shannon said...

I am planning on running today, but just found out I have a meeting at 3:15... hopefully it will be over in time for me to get to Conshy... if not, two of my folks may come... Nicole (from St.As) and Brianna (from Philly)

Next week I am planning on a Philly run...

=)

Beth said...

Let us know when your Philly Run is so I can let my group know. I have to check with Danelle to see if any of her people are coming tonight.

Chuck W. said...

I got telephone confirmation that my mentoree is coming tonight. She was asking about how many miles and suggested that we are running for time, not distance. That being said, I said that there would be someone that is running at your pace. See those that are coming at 5pm.

Beth said...

See ya there!

Beth said...

Hey Shannon - my bike is a 50 cm. I checked last night.

Shannon said...

I will see what size I need...

Chuck W. said...

Shannon-can you email Beth and I your cellphone number? We realized last night that neither of us have it in our address book.

Big mistake last night...I stayed out in the cold talking to Lisa after the rest of the group quickly exited and have proceeded to hack up my lungs since.

Got each of the girls a bouquet of flowers and chocolate covered pretzels. According to Elizabeth, I am "the best Dad ever". Expect the news conference soon...

Beth said...

Awww Chuck! You are so cute! Hopefully you don't set them up for a lifetime of disappointment... I had to kiss a lot of frogs before I found my prince who sends me flowers on Valentine's Day! Hopefully they'll find some decent guys, too! It'll be hard for any guy if they have to live up to a father who gives his girls flowers AND chocolate covered pretzels!

Anyway - sorry to hear that you hacked up a lung. At least you have a spare. I got home in just enough time to shower. We got to our 7 pm reservation at 6:58! Dinner was fun until some crazy guy sat down behind me and proceeded to talk to himself the whole time. We didn't stay too much longer after that.

I think I messed up my back this morning. It was either last night or this morning, I pulled something when I put my bag on the passenger seat in the car. It's hurting! So I'm skipping the gym today. Tomorrow I will swim and run after practice to make up for it. I think I'll go to the gym on Sunday, too.

I haven't been following the schedule yet. But I will start next week. Is it just me or does it look like the times are a little longer right from the start? I feel like we eased into biking and swimming in the same day...but maybe I just looked at the 'B' schedule.

Hi All,
It's your invisible wk out buddy! Though I have been absent for way too long, I'll be joining you after this 3 day weekend. Runs in Consh. & swims. Sorry I've been out of it, I did pass my exam and had fun skiing in Sunday River Maine. But now it's time to shape up for the April 25 Out & Back and the Tri.
On the toes (?), most likely are crimping your toes, relax and focus on pushing with the meat of your foot behind your toe (where? - if you looked at a foot print the fat part just under your big toe). But yes, Chuck was also correct - flat foot, and reminder - pull up on the return stoke. You have two sets of muscles - front and back so use both! Hope that helps and if anyone has swimmer type questions - free advise (o.k. after 3 questions it will cost you a beer!)

After reading about all of the physical problems you younger people are having I guess it is ok for me to vent a little. For the last two months I have been suffering from a neuroma (inflamed nerve) in my right foot. It finally got painful enough for me to go to a podiatrist in January. After two cortisone shots in the foot and resting for two weeks (only swimming) the foot is still hurting. I have another podiatrist appointment on Tuesday, last appointment he said the next step would be surgery to remove the nerve. That does not sound good. I am icing it four times a day.

My TNT practice on Saturday did not go well. As I got into a swimming lane with a "rookie". He said to me "Oh we swim two to a lane, I smiled and said there will be others joining us for about 4 to 5 in a lane. I said we circle swim, always swim to the right of the black line. He start his warm-up then I started. Halfway down the lane we collided heads. He swam back on the left side of the black line. I banged my teeth together real hard and my jaw hurt. I had to get out of the pool and rest for ten minutes. Ken moved me into another lane and I finished the practice. During my last lap, another new swimmer decide to take another lap as I was coming in to the end. He collided with me, but this time only arms hit. He said he thought everyone had left the lane. I got kind of mad and yelled at him that he should "ALWAYS SWIM TO THE RIGHT OF THE BLACK LINE SO NO ONE GETS HURT". I guess I was still upset from the first collision. I think I will skip next Saturday, let the newbies work out the rules.

Shannon - How did you do with your marathon?

Chuck - You are a good father, yours girls must adore you.

Beth - Hope your back gets better.

Deirdra - Glad to hear from you again, welcome back.

Hi All,
Dave - I'm glad you vented, it makes us all feel human! Remember Leon? Apparently after being drained, he decided my foot wasn't a good place and left. Not sure if he'll be back but running into my local podiatrist on our Saturday training ride last year was the BEST thing! He recommend to drain Leon when I had already scheduled the surgery to remove him!!
So I think you should name your pissed off nerve. Get on the bike, swim with experienced swimmers (or put a metal plate in your swim cap so you can cause more than receive!)
Seriously, EVERY doc and sports nut I know says AVOID surgery.
I also recomend, TLC, ice like you're already doing and Alieve liquid-gel. Outstanding! Last, let's all remember we were idiot beginners at one point.
Show up for practice Dave - it's your work out too!!

Beth said...

Hey Dave - I agree with Deirdre - please vent! And stay home because your foot hurts, maybe, but don't stay home because of idiot beginners. I don't know how many times I was in a middle lane (for average swimmers) and had to tell people to move down to the beginner lanes. It only stings for a second but then you both have a better swim practice.

If it's any consolation, some guy swam right into my head during the out and back swim of the Hammonton triathlon...which made me appreciate point to point swims so much more!!

My back is better - it's my leg that hurts now...that sports massage was painful. It's healing but I go back tomorrow and next Tuesday. I am PRAYING that I only need to go 3 times and not 4 or 5!!

I'm going to be on a 4 day 3 night cruise this weekend so I won't be at practice. Have a great week/weekend!
