North Wildwood Tri & Live Strong

Let's do our race recaps!

N Wildwood was fun...yet grueling. I am still shaking sand out of my bike and running shoes! The running-into-the-ocean start was a little daunting but if you started far enough over to the left then you were at the buoy when it was time to go around it. The current did most of the work to get to the next buoy as long as you could stay in a straight line...otherwise you had to fight the current to get back around the second buoy before heading back in.

The run through the sand was a new experience. Talk about a leg workout! Sand 6" deep is not easy to walk through let alone try to run through. T1 was not going to be good for any of us! We had to walk our bikes through sandy grass to get to the boardwalk before hitting the road. Most people carried their bikes. Once on the road, we went down to the main drag and had to do FOUR loops around before heading back to T2. There were quite a few people who averaged 45 mph on the bike course so we know not everyone did all four laps!

T2 wasn't as bad as T1 because we knew what to expect. However, the run through the deep sand was longer than anyone thought it would be. Once we got to the packed sand it was actually nice. I passed about a dozen fishermen and after I turned at the halfway point and started back, a guy caught a fish right in front of me. The turn back to the finish through deep sand was ridiculously long, intermittent with some sort of paved path. I actually had to stop, take my shoes off, dump out the sand, and then I was able to sprint to the finish line. It was nice to see Chuck and Fran there cheering me on to the Finish. My unofficial (watch) time was 1:18:14.

They didn't post times or splits because of the people who didn't complete all four laps on the bike course. So the results should be posted tomorrow. They are going to mail out the awards.

We saw quite a few TNT'ers out there. Steve Brown was volunteering and Todd Wiley did the race.

It was fun despite the deep sand and I think I would do it again.

How was Live Strong?

I should add that the bodysurfing back into the beach was fun. I'm glad I wore my wetsuit, though. I was exhausted after less than 8 minutes in the water. I can't imagine how tired the people were who didn't wear one!

LiveStrong (8/24/08) - Bernadette arrived at Montgomery County Community College (MC3) at 5:00am to volunteer for breakfast. I stayed in bed until 6:00am then got to MC3 at 6:30 plenty of time for the 7:30 start that didn't really happen until 8:05. I guess Lance slept in. I rode by myself but talked to many people along the way. I rode in memory of my father (William), uncles Gene and Franny and aunt Marge. All died from some form of cancer. I hope they find a cure, it's in my blood. I rode the 100 miles in 5:52 minutes of riding time plus 30 minutes of resting time. Average 17mph when on the bike. Lance rode the 70 mile course with the top fund raisers. For the second year in a row the food was running out for the 100 mile riders, never got the pasta or pizza from Pizza Hut. Met Ken Modica at the 80 mile rest stop. Ken was a ride marshall helping riders and reporting problems back to ride central. Rode with Ken for a short while then lost him as he stopped to help other riders. Finished Strong. I have participated in the Century LiveStrong ride each of the three years since it started. It is my goal to ride the century every year.

Beth and Chuck - GREAT job with the Wildwood tri. I think they need to incorporate some kind of lap counter in those kind of bike races. It is to easy for some racers to forget how many laps they have completed???????

I know!

So - did you get to meet Lance?

I've picked a tri for next summer:

Lance was at the start, he gave a nice short speech then he rode off with the top fund raisers. The rest of the riders were released 5 minutes later. 100 milers first then 70 milers then 40 milers. After all the bike riders left there is a run/walk. Bernadette said there were close to a thousands runners. First runner completed the 3 mile course in just over 16 minutes. I never saw Lance out on his bike.

Well, I guess it was a good thing that he made it to the Philly Live Strong Challenge. You can't keep doing something like this without putting in some face time!

SO - they posted results for the Wildwood Tri. Todd Wiley won with a time of 47:50. #2 came in at 50:08. No question that Todd is an elite.

Francesca came in 14th in our age group with 1:12:53. I came in 19th. 27 women in our age group. Sorry Chuck - you didn't beat my 1:18:12 time. Close, though. Chuck finished in 1:19:10. He's gaining on me!!

Hi all.
Sounds like Wildwood was interesting. Would you do it again? I made PB & J sandwiches, cut oranges and donuts for 3 1/2 hours on Sunday before the race. PB & J sandwiches were a big hit with runners, bikers and walkers. Went home for a few hours and came back to see Lance come in. He flew through the finish line which was disappointing since it was hard to see him. Felt he should have come across real slow so everyone who waited to see him could have seen him. Saw two crashes while I waited for Dave 1 was 100 yards from the finish line, she cut the left turn too tight and fell hard. Needed an ambulance for her. The second one was 10 feet after the finish line, the rider lost her balance, hit the photographer and knocked her over, hit all the roses and knocked them over and fell pretty hard herself. Very impressed with all the people who participated. Heard that there were about 5000 people in the event and that Philadelphia was the highest fundraiser of the four events. Yeah Philly!!!. Disappointed that after Dave got over for food Lance had already left. I feel he should have hung around to see as many of the finishers as he could but he said his speech and left. Enjoy the rest of your summer. Hope we can get together soon.

Bernadette - I guess your saying I didn't ride fast enough so we could see Lance.

Thanks Babe!

Just kidding, Lance only rode 70 miles with the top fund raisers. The century riders were all still on the course when Lance was giving his going away speech but it was still very cool to know that we were supporting his battle against cancer.

Today my LCHS girls soccer team have our 2nd scrimmage, 2:00 bus to the away game. Next Wednesday we start our season. Still only 1 incident for jumping jacks.

Wow Dave, I'm impressed that there's still only ONE incident!

Yes, I think I'd do Wildwood again. It was crazy but fun.

Sounds like Wildwood was a blast. Will you do it again next year?

How are the wedding plans coming along, Beth? All done? Dancing up a storm?

Hey, is anyone signed up for Marlton? LBI?

Beth said...

I know that Chuck and I ARE signed up for Marlton and that Dave and Bernadette are not.

Wedding plans are going well. Lots of little stuff to do now!

Hello all! Having fun with the girls at the beach. Wildwood Tri was a lot of fun. What was funny is we asked Todd how he did and he shrugged his shoulders and said, "Eh, alright". I guess if I only came in first by 2 minutes it would be a bad day for me too! It was a little hairy on the bike, with people riding on the left and right side of the road. Running along the beach was pretty cool, but running across the soft sand was not!

I haven't done much this week except hang with the girls, digging holes and building sandcastles. I was able to take a 25 mi bike ride up the coast. Heading up into the wind, getting pushed by the wind on the way back.

I am not sure how all this "training" will affect my Marlton race, but I will use it as an excuse either way. Off to make myself a bloody mary and some pancakes...
