Road Trip Details...

Figured we would need space to hear about the Ohio and Lake Placid road trips... I have been tracking Ken on the Placid course this morning... although I know not as exciting as being at the race... =)

Yesterday I ran 12 miles... which was not fun... mostly because I had to run it alone (I don't know why I wasn't able to get any takers on my exciting run opportunity)... it also wasn't fun because it was hot and humid (didn't make the 6am wake up call as I hoped/planned!)... but was running by 9am and finished by 11:10.

I road my bike this morning... which actually felt great... my hips were sore/tight from the run yesterday, but 20miles on the bike fixed that right up! I am heading to a WNBA basketball game in a little while... hope everyone had a wonderful weekend.

Shannon, I really admire your discipline! Today I had to work on my job search activities (sense of impending disaster...), so didn't get to work out. Am now feeling that sluggish feeling that comes on non-workout days. I'll have to run in the am. Saturday ran 4.5 miles in 75 minutes - ha ha.

The T3 yahoo group emails are so cute - they're tracking their members at LP. Last email I saw said "...8 finished, 5 to go..." or some such. Think we'll be there one day?

Dave, can't wait to hear what it was like.

Ken's time looked good... close to last year... how bad was the rain? The marathon training is definitely becoming mental... especially the long runs... and now my midweek run is 8miles... =(

Shannon-I don't know how you run in this weather. On Sunday there was a party for my sister's father-in-law that we were invited to attend. I went for a long swim during the party and sliced open my big toe on some projectile that was in the water. I saw it as I swam over it. It hurts when I walk on it so no running for the first couple of days this week until it heals. The good news is that since I am working from home, we initiated a "No Shoes, No Problem" policy.

Shelly-A run is a run is a run. Take pride in whatever you do no matter the time it takes. How many other people do you know ran 4.5 miles Saturday?

I survived the trip! More details to follow...

On Friday morning, Pam (future sister-in-law) showed up at 6 AM, right on time even though she called at 5:40 and told me that she was running late (?)…and we got to Downingtown at 6:45 AM since we had to be ready to leave there by 7 AM. Of course we were the last ones to show up! So we got on the road…five people in Mrs. Klein’s Highlander and Eric’s cousin, Linda, and his sister, Pam, in my car. Six and a half hours and two pit stops later we arrived at the hotel in Zanesville, Ohio.

On Friday, we stopped and had DINNER before we went up to the Longaberger office. This is a building shaped like a basket so it was pretty cool. Dinner was at 3 pm. We had an hour in the office and then went to the main street of Dresden and shopped at the cute little stores there. We didn’t have much time to see anything, though, because everything closes at 6 pm! We did, however, stop at Kohl’s because Linda’s watched died…and wouldn’t you know…there was a dollar store we had to check out. Can’t miss a dollar store! Fortunately for me, I needed plain red bags for bridesmaid gifts and I found them there, so it wasn’t a total waste. After that, we went back to the hotel for happy hour in Aunt Nancy’s room. So we drank wine and then they pulled out the temporary tattoos! Yes, everyone got at least one, even Eric’s 78 year old Aunt Florence! Thank God for the wine!

On Saturday morning, we all drove back up to the Longaberger Homestead and got there when it opened at 9 AM. Pam and I made baskets at 10 AM and then I got to briefly look around before it was time for lunch (but what I really mean is DINNER). So we ate, looked around a little more, and then we left. I was having fun and finding great deals…I could have used another two hours there! So I still feel like I didn’t get to see much of the Homestead. I did, however, sign up to be a Consultant! So if you need anything or want to have a home/book show, please let me know! I’ll give discounts to my first 4 customers! 15% off your order if you have a home show, 10% off your order for a book show, or 5% off a single order.  I think I’m going to plan another trip out there but I need at least 15 people to go with me. Road trip anyone?

Anyway – after the Homestead, we went back to Dresden and shopped but shortly after we got there, the power went out. So we shopped in the dark. Then we stopped for frozen custard before heading back to the hotel. They dropped me and all of our bags off at the hotel and then the 6 of them went to the Wilds, which is a safari. It’s the world’s largest research conservatory. It said it was just minutes off the exit. What they meant to say was that it was 60 minutes off the exit! And that the “twilight” safari started at 4 pm. So by the time they all got there, it was closed. The security guard let them look around but they didn’t get to see much. Meanwhile, I was back at the hotel enjoying a Captain and Coke while reading my book!

The whole weekend they had me navigating from the back (third) row of seats from the Highlander and they thought that since we had a GPS we would know exactly how to get there. Well, if you don’t have an address, it’s not that easy. Anyway, I tried to relinquish navigation duties numerous times but they wouldn’t let me. So I had to scream up to the front seat so they could hear me. If I said anything at a normal decibel, Aunt Nancy would say, “Is she saying something? If she is, we can’t hear her.” Frustrating with a capital “F”! And Mrs. Klein can’t really tell her right from left very well. We told her to turn left at the light and she got into the right lane. Or turn left at the light and she made a U-turn instead. I was ready to pull out my hair!

I also felt as if Pam was trying so hard to be buddies with me, she wouldn’t do anything by herself. She had to ask me if it was OK if she wanted to do something. Like ordering food….I simply asked her what she was having and she would say something like “Portabello raviolis, is that OK?” Not “Is that OK?” in a nasty tone…but a “is that OK with you” I need your approval tone. I just kept saying to her that she could do whatever she wanted, it didn’t matter to me. She’s 38 for crying out loud! She could do whatever she wants to do!! And she has this laugh that she does after she says anything…even if it’s not funny. Or if someone makes a joke, she’ll laugh. Then two minutes later she’ll go “heh, heh” again…and then another minute later you’ll hear another “heh, heh”…it’s like the most annoying echoing laugh I’ve ever heard. How did Eric turn out normal (or at least not as crazy as the rest of them)???

Whew...I feel better now!

Oh, Beth. Only 50-60 more years to go. What I always appreciated about in-laws is that they make one's own family seem OK.

Job chaos - they're going to transition my project to someone else. I say thank god, I can get back to normal (assuming I can figure out what that is). But then the ego steps in...

Is it just Shannon and me at NJ State this weekend? Any Saturday workout plans?

NEWS FLASH

On July 26, 2009.

I will be swimming, biking and running
in Lake Placid.

Much more will follow!

Congratulations Dave!! I'm glad you got a spot! I guess there had to be a ton of volunteers vying for spots this year! Good job. I guess I should start looking into the timeshare for that weekend! Woohoo!

Shannon said...

Yeah... Congrats Dave! That's exciting!! =) Definitely start looking for that timeshare now Beth! It's amazing that I have been at work 4hrs and done very little... yet time has flown by! =) This means that things are going to drag this afternoon... oh no! Your trip sounds grand Beth... I am fascinated by the building shaped like a basket... my brother's first wife was Longaberger fan... perhaps that is why I have a mental block towards those baskets... haha!

Fact or Fiction-there is a drop in the humidity after a humongous rain storm at 3am? FICTION. I though that it would a nice cool morning to go for a run, especially after the rain from last night however was quickly reminded that was not the case.

Who is up for a group workout Saturday morning? I was thinking of meeting in Oaks at 7:30am. I know it is early, but I want to get out before it gets hot. Also, I have an afternoon party to go to. I hope that you all can join me.

Beth said...

I can do the Saturday morning workout. Do you mind if Paul, my former mentee from TNT joins us? He may come for the run on Thursday night, too. What do you think Chuck - 30 bike/30 run as long as it isn't raining tomorrow night? (Email me)

Shelly said...

Congratulations, Dave. We need to schedule a get-together so the stories can be told!

I'll be at Oaks Saturday morning at 7:30 am.

Shannon said...

I have a 13 mile run on Saturday morning if anyone wants to join! =) Is it bad that I am already not looking forward to the run? Actually the Saturday run I am not worried about... I just don't think my body is going to want to run the 3miles on Sunday at the triathlon... owell!

Chuck W. said...

My plan on Saturday morning was to bike for an hour and run for 1/2 hr. If the rest of the team wants to swim, let me know so I can let my sister know. I don't think that I have the time to do all three myself, as we have a family party in the afternoon.

Beth said...

I'm OK with not swimming. I have a lot to do around the house before I meet my sister and her boyfriend at the winery in Maryland. I LOVE that our halfway point is a winery! It's Big Band night! Woohoo!

So - does anyone want to see how my car looks after skidding into an Acura MDX? I'll see if I can figure out how to post it... Darn rain. This limo pulled out in front of the Acura and she had enough time to stop and not hit him. Unfortunately I did not have that luxury and bumped into her. Luckily I was going less than 20 mph and no airbags went off. All I did to her car was knock off her mufflers from the fastener and dent a plastic thing underneath that didn't look like it did anything anyway. My poor Honda is going to need some TLC after this!

Beth said...

how do you post a picture in a comment?

Shannon said...

Sorry to hear about your car Beth... as a fellow survivor of recent car drama! I actually just got my car back Monday night... it is all pretty and fixed up... which is only making me more protective of it! =)

For some reason the workout you guys are talking about on Saturday is more fun than mine... I'm jealous!

BernadetteM said...

Beth sorry to hear about the car. Were you hurt? The building that looks like a basket sounds fun even though the rest of your trip sounds interesting. Does anyone have a place in Ocean City, NJ open the week of August 2 to 9? We are on for the Saturday morning bike and run and we would also like to swim if that can be worked out. See ya then

I need to push tomorrow mornings workout from 7:30 to 7:45am. Shannon-are you running in DC or Philly?

Last night after my bike ride, I was on the phone in the parking lot at Spring Mill. A cyclist coming out of the trailhead there (heading upstream towards Conshy) never stopped pedaling as he crossed the road. Apparently he never looked to his left, as a woman driving out of the SEPTA lot ran right into him. Luckily she wasn't driving too fast, as after a couple of minutes, he was able to get off the ground and ride away. It got me thinking, however. Who was at fault? Who is supposed to yield? At the bridge near the Perk house, there is a sign that requires you to yield to the path. I don't know if there is a sign there, but are we, as bicyclist required to stop at each intersection (when there isn't a stop sign)? On the other locations along the trail where we cross a street, are we supposed to yield to cars?

Shannon said...

That's a good question Chuck... I always assume that when there are no signs (ie: stop, yield etc)... that the standard rules of the road apply... that the bicylce would have the right away (same as if he was driving a car)... but I am not sure if that is correct... and regardless of what the 'official' rules are... bicycle vs. car is never going to turn out correctly... a woman was just hit and killed here in DC by a garbage truck... she was in the bike lane and had the right away.
=(

I am running in DC. I haven't plotted my 14miles yet... I am going to try and find a different trail to run on help spice things up... but how spicey can running 14miles really get?

Beth said...

My opinion on the bike path right-of-way discussion is that the biker should have slowed/stopped and looked first before riding into a street that frequently has cars intersecting the path. (common sense?) It's not like it's a bike lane running next to the car lane where the biker has the right-of-way. I don't know. It's a shame for the guy that got hit. I hope he's OK!

Chuck W. said...

My initial reaction was that it was the bikers fault. The driver can't see down the trail to know if a bike is coming and he gave her no time to react. I think that biker is lucky he wasn't hit harder or rolled over top of her car.

If I don't get the "wave forward" from a driver, I stop. Of course, I don't have the super fast cool bike like Shannon, Dave or Bernadette. It is much easier to stop my bike than those three elite machines.
