The last week of January

Good News for all...The days are getting longer and the normal average temps are beginning to rise. It is only days (mentally speaking) until we can swim again outside. I did check on the Perk Sunday but it is a tad too cold without the wetsuit.

I don't know about you all, but I haven't been in the pool for a while. I have the sneaking suspicion that it will come back to bite me in the arse when we start to practice next month. I have started to run more consistently since the New Year and on Saturday ran a 5k at a 10:30 pace. For me, that is good and shows progress. Last week was tough because I was traveling but I did go to the hotel gym, which consisted of a broken step machine, a bike and a treadmill and jumped on the bike for 30 min.

I think that Wednesday is the Conshy REI meeting and will see some of you there. I have been given 7 mentorees so far, with two already setting up there websites. No HM's yet, but we shall see.

What do you mean by HM's? Hot mamas?

I got a mentee already and I didn't even go to a meeting. I don't know why I got one already! And I don't even know if this person is a citizen with a name like Feico. Shannon, did you go to the Center City meeting last week and maybe met him?

Danelle and I are going to the meeting at REI in Conshy and the one in Wayne on Thursday.

Congratulations on your 10:30 pace! Great news. Keep up the good work! I have been working out but haven't been swimming. I'm paying for a membership at the PSC and I think I went twice so far in January! It's horrible! I think I'm just going to have to get up EARLY and go swim at the gym before work.

Beth-Besides Dave, I am the only guy who participates in this blog. Do you really think that I was talking about the "hot" level of my mentoree's to you ladies? I meant High Maintenance!

I belong to the Y and have access to the pool, but just haven't used it. The Y in Ambler, which has the pool, is stupid crowded after work and so I go to the one in Ft. Washington, which doesn't have a pool.

Are you sure the Feico is a man?

Chuck, Congrats on the 10:30 pace. About a week ago this past Saturday I went to the St. Joe's swim practice to give my application to Todd. Bernadette and I saw Shannon, thanks for the bike case Shannon. I received my new shirt and information folder in the mail today. It's now time for serious training. I run 5k M/W/F at lunch. Spin M/W/F evening at the LaCrest Health Club and swim T/TH at the YMCA in Lansdale. I have been in maintenance mode so I have been relaxing Sat & Sun working on house chores. I will now start long runs and if the weather is not too bad long rides on the weekend. Chuck, watch out, my 5k during lunch today was a 9:17 pace.
Wednesday, Bernadette and I will be flying to Boca Raton, FL for 5 days returning Sunday night during the Super Bowl. Bernadette is working Friday and Saturday, during that time I will be biking as much of FL as possible. I am psyched!!!!!

And I'm jealous!! I'd love to be going to Florida, too. Eric is going tomorrow to Sanibel but he'll be back on Thursday. One of these days I'll have to go with him and make it a long weekend!

I'm not sure what my pace is. Yassya puts us on the treadmill but she makes me change the pace all the time and we're only on it for 4 to 10 minutes at a time...never long enough to go very far. Who knows - I might be able to keep up with Dave's 9:17 pace...but I bet that's just jogging for him!

I haven't run a 5K since the beginning of December! I better get out there and start practicing! I think I'm going to start getting up and going to the PSC to swim on M/W/F mornings. I'll do my weight training and cardio classes at lunch. And then maybe 5Ks on T/TH in the evening. The longer runs and bike rides will have to wait until the weekends...but I might just ride indoors with the trainer until it warms up a little.

I am now officially done training or thinking about the half-marathon... and just training for triathlons... I am excited to go be lazy in Florida for the half-marathon... if only I didn't have to run! =) I actually have come to love running 6-8 miles... longer runs kinda suck! Training for you all will be no problem... you all kick a$$. =)

Enjoy your trip Dave... have fun at the recruitment meetings! Hopefully more folks will sign up... numbers are low! =(

A 9:17 pace? I would be quite happy if I ran a 9:17 pace for the Philly tri. Of course by then Dave will be running sub 8's!

Beth-is Yassya your trainer? Are you still doing that thing with NBC10 or is that on your own? I wish that I went to a better gym than the Y in Ambler, because it is impossible after work to get a machine and the training staff, with the rare exception is horrible. Since we have Maggie in the after school program through the Y, I can justify having a separate gym membership too.

Shannon-is your race this weekend? Do you know how many people already signed up for TNT for the Philly Tri?

Still have 3weeks til the race, but I am both mentally and physically over long distance running... after consulting with my freaky marathon friends... they gave me permission to stop the long distances since I have done multiple 12&13 mile runs and one 15. (Hey... the random dude on the bus could have told me to stop the long runs... and I would listen!)... as of last Saturday there were a little less than 50 signed up... some more have signed up since, but Amy didn't give the exact # last night on the pre-St.A's recommitment conference call.

Chuck, Did you get that email from Amy about Feb. 4th? I don't feel like going to the airport for a call back night. It's bad enough I'll be down there for the kick off. I haven't decided if I'm going to the fundraiser thing yet.

Shannon - your training has kicked some serious a$$!! You've done 12, 13, and 15 mile runs? You're totally prepared! You should be doing no more than 7 miles 2 to 3 weeks before the half. If your run is on a Sunday then take it easy from Thursday up until race day. You've done the training...you just need to give your legs a rest before using them to run 13 again. They say that carbo loading is best to do TWO nights before the race, not just the night before. And some personal advice...I find that if I have protein (chicken) along with my pasta the night before then I have a much better race. (I can't remember if you're a vegetarian or not...so hopefully that's good advice!)

Chuck, I'll see you at REI tonight...anyone else going? (I'm pretty sure Danelle is going, too.)

Shannon said...

Thanks for the advice Beth... I 'may' do another 7 mile race, but think just jogs for a period of time (ala Todd's triathlon training)will be it. I definitely will remember the protein... flesh and all! =) I wanna figure out how to 'step' up training for the triathlon... to do more than just complete it... Steve said he had some thoughts... we shall see. Ideas? The stepping up won't happen til after the half and really mainly for Philly... St.A's can be a warm-up =)

Hope the meeting was fun tonight

The meeting was good. I met two of the people I'll be mentoring. Both seem nice.

We heard that someone got hit by an SUV as he was pulling out of the parking lot so that wasn't good news! Hopefully whoever it was is OK!

If you get advice on how to step up the bike, let me know! That's where I need help. I'm already working on the run with my speed training. And for the swimming, I think I'm going to take a Total Immersion seminar at my gym. The only problem is that it's expensive.

Ken told us last night that we weren't going to be able to swim with the team on Saturday mornings if we have 90-100 people on the team! We're going to have to come early and swim with St.A's.

Watch out for Beth at this info meetings. She struts around with all her cool TNT gear shouting "look at me, look at me". It really is just sad. I can only imagine what it will be like at the kickoff when she is surround by "her people".

Shannon said...

Yeah... the Philly mentors last year swam with St.A's as well... ultimately, when the #s decrease in the pool as the season on... (ie: by the end of the St.A's season)... hopefully we can swim with Philly after that...

BUT... St.A's is a rockin' group to swim with... =) (not that I am biased or anything!!)

Chuck - you are just jealous that you don't have a cool vest, too! Your smack talk just bounces right off me. :)
