So it begins this week. I am not able to make it to this evening's phone bank event as I begin to head back to West Wareham, MA. I moved my meetings around so that I will be home by the kickoff on Thursday. I find it hard to believe that it is time to get back in the pool. I kept thinking that I had a couple of weeks to go, but I guess that was a couple of week ago...
It is a very somber morning here. With the Giants winning the Superbowl, I will now have to hear it again from all of my New Jersey clients and personnel of how they won and we can't. I am refusing to answer my phone until April...

I still think it's great that the Giants beat the Patriots. I HATE the Patriots. Go STEELERS!!
I'm bagging the phone bank thing tonight too.
I'm dragging my feet trying to get motivated to go to the gym at lunch. Ugh... I guess I should just put one foot in front of the other. Eventually I'll get there. I swam this Saturday morning for only 20 minutes. I've decided that I'm going to need to get more sleep if I'm going to get up to swim before work 3 times a week! I wish spring was here already!!
Have a safe trip Chuck!
I clearly am very excited about my Giants winning the SB last night AND I am also glad the Patriots lost... =)
I have class tonight so I can't go to the call back meeting... I have discovered lack of caffeine does not make working out at the crack of dawn or late at night easy... which means I am back to having some caffeine every once and a while.
Have a good week... safe travels... see folks on Saturday.
No Kick Off meeting for you Shannon?
Here's another thing I noticed: giving blood is not conducive to working out! I bagged the idea of a light swim last night after I almost passed out giving blood. That'll be it for me until after the race. I just wanted to get my good deed in early. Unfortunately, I am wiped out today! I'm going to try to get up and go tomorrow morning. I know it's just going to take one time of getting up early and then I'll be fine...it's just starting with that first time of getting out of bed during the 5 o'clock hour. It's just so NOT appealing!
Have a good week everyone!
Damn... forgot about kickoff... I will be there... I probably would have remembered (make that hopefully) before Thursday... but thanks for the heads up... giving blood always kicks my butt... I hate getting up at 5am when it is the first time or 100th time... =)
see folks Thursday...
Bernadette and I are back from Boca Raton, FL. It seems like the warm weather followed us north. Not quite the 83°F from the south but not to bad. At the last minute I called a bike shop in Boca and they rented me a road bike for $80, not bad since AirTran was going to charge me $130 to ship my bike. While Bernadette was working I rode Friday to Fort Lauderdale (50 miles) then Saturday to Palm Beach (70 miles). Also did some swimming in the hotel pool and in the Atlantic Ocean and running all around. I will see some of you Thursday night.
I got back early yesterday and decided to take the spin class at the Y. I knew one I got there that I should have wore my gloves and bike shorts. My hands were sliding all over the handlebars and my arse is unbelievably sore this morning. For the record, I had none of these issues sitting on my couch all winter.
I plan on going to the pool at lunch. Look forward to seeing the Team tonight.
My trainer was on a ski vacation last week so we have our first group workout with her today at noon. I'm not looking forward to it since we've technically had two weeks off from her! I took spinning yesterday, too, and it's not my glutes that hurt, it's more like the tops of my hamstrings where they attach to the glutes. Everything is stiff! I really need to stretch more. I sound pathetic. Please tell me that it's NOT all downhill after you turn 30!
I have had tightness in my right hamstring for a month and can't figure out what to do. It doesn't bother me when I am exercising, but I feel it afterwards. Both of my shoulders bother me most of the time and are probably full of scar tissue. I have decided to ignore the pain until I can't take it anymore because I think that the Dr. will want to poke around and I don't want to start that before June.
My first trip back to the pool was an eye opener! I did about 14 laps with breaks in between. I have made it my goal to improve my swimming. Before I never felt comfortable breathing out of both sides and I think that all that extra breathing is what may have caused the cramping.
What time are we supposed to be there tonight?
The cramping is probably from not getting enough oxygen or else you were dehydrated. In the pool I used to breathe every 4 to 6 strokes but that wasn't getting enough oxygen to my muscles. But I still feel more comfortable in the pool breathing every 4. But in open water, I do every 3 so I alternate sides and stay more in a straight line. It's all about comfort level, though. If you can practice breathing every 3 strokes in the pool, then you should be fine during the swim in the race.
If you want a swim clinic, there's one at the PSC in Radnor on March 8-9. It's $495, though. I really want to take it but I don't know if that's in the budget.
Chuck - like me, you need to STRETCH!!! If you are lifting weights, try warming up on the treadmill for 5 minutes first. In between sets, stretch the muscle you just worked for 30 seconds, not just 10. After your workout, make sure you get some really GOOD stretching in...at least 30 seconds per muscle.
If your hamstrings are tight, try bending from the waist and touching your toes, keeping your back parallel to the ground. (Don't round your back as you get closer to your toes.) You should feel the stretch in your hamstrings. Just hold that stretch for awhile. Do it after you get out of bed in the morning, and before you go to bed at night. And before and after your workouts. It could take awhile before the tightness gives.
My massage therapist is actually going to start giving me a sports massage. She wants to work on my ankle and my shins. I had a bad ankle sprain about 4 or 5 years ago and my ankle is still stiff, and shin splints from who knows when. It's intense massage to get rid of the scar tissue. She said they are 30 minute sessions ($35). They start with heat and end with ice. And they have to be frequent so that the scar tissue doesn't re-adhere. So I'm going to go every 4 or 5 days for 30 minutes at a time and she claims that I'll notice a major improvement when I'm running. It should only take 3 sessions. She thinks that if I don't try this and then do the longer endurance race, I'll be much more likely to get hurt again. And I believe her. My ankle has never been the same. If she can get it to feel better before I start training more intensely, I'm going to try it. She could probably help you with your shoulders, too! No doctor necessary. And if you're actively training for a TNT event, she's only $40 for a 60 minute massage! She'll give you one more after your event, too, at the same price. After that she's only $60/hour which is good for this area. The only disadvantage is that she's in Jenkintown. For me, that's a 35 minute drive with good traffic. But she's worth it!
That is pretty cheap! I paid $80 for an hour plus tip this past Saturday for a deep tissue. I have never had a sports massage and would be interested.
As for stretching, I know that I don't do that enough. My problem is that I don't know how to stretch properly.
There is a great woman (sadly I can't remember her name) who came to St.Joe's after one practice recently with St.Anthony's and led an amazing stretching clinic... she is friends with Steve... she is going to come for Philly, but I know that if you asked Steve... he could give you her contact information and she also left detailed stretching information with the team... you probably could get your hands on that as well... she provided general stretching info, endurance/tri specific and if folks had individual needs as well... worth a try and free...
I need to work on the stretching between sets that you talked about Beth... I am a horrible stretcher... soooo easy to skip... though obviously no good! I have taken your trainer's advice and a dude at the gym about the treadmill pre-lifting and it has definitely helped... or at least I think it has! =)
Can someone send me the training schedule? I never got Amy's email.
Thanks!
Hi all, Haven't written lately but work has been very strained with one of the coordinators leaving which is making more work for the rest of us and my brother had a heart attck which added another whole level of stress in y life. He is doing much better but it was scary for a while. Loved florida last week, swimming in the ocean and a pool were so relaxing and enjoyable. Swam a little for exercise but nothing like Dave did. Good meeting and relaxing time away. Enjoyed the discussion of stretching. That is a very big problem for me. Is there any one who has the information from the lady at the TNT meeting on stretching? I know I don't stretch and really need it. Will have to look into the sports massage sounds like it would be very helpful. Heard you all were at St. Joe's yesterday, wish I could join you.I look forward to when you start running/biking on the River drive and I will join you then. I agree with you Chuck about getting up at 5 it is hard no matter how often you do it. I know the gym opens at 5 but I'm not a morning person. Some days I have to be in work at 6:15 so I would have to go really early. It is tri season so I will really have to push myself to get going again. Keep up the good work everyone and hope to see you soon. Shannon I still would like to switch the green water bottle holder I got in my She Rox goody bag for the pink one you got. If you still want to switch can you bring it to your next swimming morning and give it to Dave?
Sorry to hear about your brother Bernadette... glad to hear things are better... definitely keeping him and your whole family in our thoughts! Let us know if you need anything.
OMG... I would LOVE to switch bottle holders... while I have 'bonded' with the pink holder... it definitely is more you than me... and I feel that green is more me than you! =) I won't be at practice next weekend cause of the half, but the following week the 'switch' will be made. =)
Hey Bernadette.... wanna do an olympic distance race on July 27th with me? Great course!! I think you should do it!! (Not that I am biased or anything) =)
The warm weather is going to rock! I will try and get the stretch info for you!
Which Olympic race are you doing on July 27th??
