Crash and Burn

Yeah... Bernadette is back on the blog! Glad to hear the MS150 went well. How was the 5K today? My swim today at the triathlon went great... almost 12min faster than philly AND no current (phew... i did miss the shorter swim about a halfway into the mile swim ) The 18-19 miles on the bike were also great...took me a little over an hour... BEFORE... crashing over my handle bars onto the road/ditch. =( I tried to walk the last 6 miles, but was pulled. I have road rash from elbow to hand... and on leg...the worse part is my left shoulder was separated (collar bone is angry too) Obviuosly never made it to the run. OWELL!!

TNT is about to kick off St.A's training-- which is on April 27th.... even though i must become a runner 4 that silly half marathon... a bike ride would be fun...meeting for beer &food would be too!!!

Shannon - OUCH! Kudos to you for attempting to finish after your crash. My goodness, woman! You're tough! Let those bumps and bruises heal!

Bernadette - sorry to hear about your fall! How did that happen?

I had a rough weekend myself. I jammed my middle finger and my big toe during my two-hand touch football game on Saturday. No major injuries, just a lot of discomfort. The toe hurt while doing my 12 mile run yesterday. And last night I was hobbling around from that run with a sore foot and major knee pain.

Chuck - as you requested - I ran 3 miles with Danelle on Saturday morning which was more like: run 1/2 mile, walk 1/4 mile, run 1/4 mile, walk 1/4 mile, and so on...but I think we ran the whole third mile. Yesterday was my 12-miler in preparation for the Nike Women's half marathon on Oct. 21st in San Fran. I think I'm ready...I just have to heal from the damage I did yesterday. I'm not going for any records, though. Apparently mile 6 is a killer hill (almost vertical!) which I've decided to walk up rather than kill myself trying to run it! Hopefully the race will go well.

What has everyone else been up to?

Jeez people, what is with all the "war" injuries?

I did go running on Saturday morning here at Wentz Run Park in Whitpain Twp. Nice cinder/blacktop trail that has a couple of different length loops of between .5 and .8 miles. This is not a particularly flat trail with a few short ups and downs. I ran my 5k there since I did not think any was going to be able to run the Conshy race and I had outside house work to get done.

I found out about a bike race in Hershey on 10/21. There are 3 30-mile courses to choose from or you can combine 2 for a full meteric century. They say there are 2 relatively flat courses, so I think my brother and I are going to do that. Race starts at 8am. If you go to active.com and search "Hershey" you will see the link.

Beth-did you do the morning workout with Danelle AND 12miles? If so, I have a Dora the Explorer sticker for you the next time we all get together for you efforts!

Shannon-even though you jumped over your handlebars and refused to finish the race, you get a sticker too.

I really want to run that 8k in November and need to get my arse moving, so I am running either at lunch today or immediately after work tonight.

Shannon, you're crazy!
Beth, Congrads on the hitch'en news
Bernadette, I assume you've recovered from your MS150 mishap
Chuck, Good find - looks interesting:
Hershey Ride:

This weekend I hiked, watched the PSU game and strained my right elbow (beer related).

Tonight I have a cooking team building event so I can't meet to run (forced smiling will be my only exercise tonight) then I'm going to the vegan spa Thurs - Tues, plan to get back my good eating & exercise habits.

Upon return, anyone interested in attending the TNT meeting Oct 22, 6:30pm at REI - 200 West Ridge Pike Conshohoken? We can sign up but also help recruit more cool people to our sub team "Team Completers"....

Deer Dre-Are you already signing up for the Philly Tri or are you planning on signing up for another event?

I am looking forward to my sticker... today's workout involved water running followed by shoulder/elbow therapy...ugh!! I hopefully will be okay to run by the weekend... I would love to do the bike ride on 10/21, but my bike didn't make it back from North Carolina due to crash (I barely made it back)... that means no bike until Turkey day. =( But, on the bright side that just leaves more time to run... YUCK!!

I should have addressed this to all, but are you planning on participating in the St. Anthony's and Philly Tri's in 2008 through TNT? I know for me that is more than I can get fundraising.

Shannon said...

I am mentoring with TNT for St.Anthony's (not fundraising though)... I am planning on doing Philly (haven't decided about TNT... maybe mentor again), but also am hoping TNT does a half-iron... which I would do over Philly.

Hi all, Shannon so sorry to hear about your fall. You are a true champion to try and finish the race. How are you feeling now? Make sure you give yourself time to heal before you do any other events. That's the nurse talking so listen.I also had a fall about 39 miles into the MS 150 ride. I was trying to avoid running into the bike in front of me went off the side of the road and flipped over my handlebars into a ditch. Lucky for me no broken bones, only many bruises, 5 stitches and one mild concussion. Have been on the bike once since then but not ready for a long ride just yet. Tried spinning but standing on the spin bike hurts my head so did a long seated climb. Beth good luck in the 1/2 marathon. Hope your toe feels better. good kuck with training hope we can et together soon

Hey Chuck - I did 3 miles on Saturday and 12 on Sunday. And none on Monday or Tuesday. I should run a few tonight, but I don't think I'm going to make it to the gym.

I'd like to do a half ironman next year. I don't think I'm going to do anything with TNT, though, other than maybe mentor. My core fundraising dollars came from people I used to work with so I don't know how successful I'd be if I can't pester them everyday. Shannon - did you volunteer to mentor or did they ask you to?

I need to do a 5 to 7 mile training run this weekend. How far I go depends on how my feet (and toe) feel. Anyone interested in joining me? If not, I'll probably head over to NJ to run with my friend who is also doing the race.

That Hershey ride sounds great but that's when I'll be running the hills of San Fran. Have fun & Chuck, please don't flip over your handlebars!

BTW- I want to do the 8K too but I need to see how my knees hold up after this half marathon. If everything goes well, then I will do the 8K.

I just got back from meetings in MA. Today's workout consisted of buying beers for my clients and nachos at some non-description mexican bar in the Providence airport. Does that count as working out?

Shannon said...

Sounds like an ideal workout to me!! =) I am running a 5K this weekend if folks want to join... good times! I got an email about mentoring a while back and randomly responded not long ago... I only plan on officially 'doing' TNT (fundraising etc.) if they did a half-iron... which they are talking about... otherwise I plan on just mentoring... I am most likely going to participate in St.A's, but register as an individual... travel with TNT etc. Be on the lookout for my exciting ethnography email!! =)

Deirdre: I'm still going to be in San Fran on 10/22 but if you go to the TNT meeting, let me know what they say. I know they were thinking of adding a half ironman to their list of events and I'd consider doing that. I'm sure I'd do the Philly Tri again but I wouldn't raise money for it.

Chuck W. said...

Shannon-who did you talk to about mentoring and what exactly does that mean.

Shannon said...

I spoke with Amy Rivera (she is the new staff person for triathlons and century rides)... basically the mentors are supposed to support and help with fundraising (along with general support) of TNT folks... it involves some random paperwork, checking in with folks, encouraging etc. As a mentor you can fundraise (which gives you the opportunity to participate just like we did last year... $ covered etc) or not fundraise (which means if you want to do the event, you have to register, pay to get there etc). You have to attend meetings to recruit people... (ie: the meeting on 10/22)... the meetings that are happening now are just for spring season... which means the ONLY triathlon event is St.Anthony's. Philly and hopefully a half-event will happen during summer meetings which start in the winter sometime.

Oh my gosh, Shannon. Clearly I need to check this blog more often because I just heard about your crash! Yikes, that sounds scary. I hope you are all recovered - and you appeared to be when I saw you out of the grimy Septa bus window heading up Walnut yesterday. And I am eagerly awaiting the ethnography project.

Good luck Beth with the 1/2 marathon this weekend! And to everyone else who is doing stuff. I will be on a bike ride with BCP out in Lancaster on Saturday, but I just might lasso a horse and buggy and catch a free ride;)

As for TNT stuff, I am definitely considering the 1/2 ironman option if they form a team.

Beth said...

Thanks Nicole!

I'm definitely considering that half ironman option, too...

Have a great bike ride.

Next Thursday I'm going to try to get together with Deirdre to return her bike trainer. We're going to try to meet at the Great American Pub in Conshy for a drink that evening. It'll probably be closer to 8 pm rather than right after work because we both have stuff to do that evening. If anyone else wants or needs to come out for a drink and maybe get a pep talk, stop by. I'll post more details next week...after I get back from San Fran and Napa.

Have a great weekend everybody!

p.s. Shannon, I sent the email to Danelle for the project. Her company blocks access to the blog, but she's interested in doing it!
