After getting home and checking my email... I out of habit went to read the blog and wondered for a moment why nobody had posted anything... fear not, it clicked soon after!! =)
Here's the details on the sprint triathlon Todd told the Philly mentees about... it's a week before Philly, but supposed to be a great way to get all three events in as a practice on an easy course... I am thinking of doing it...

Hello Tri-buddies, I was very honored today that you all stayed many hours to celebrate my finish with me, thank you. I checked the Black Bear results and discovered that you all beat me. GREAT job everyone, especially Bernadette, she beat two other triathletes, a male and a female both 20 years younger then her, way to go Babe!
Chuck - My son Brian was fishing in Jim Thorpe today and hooked a timing chip, maybe it was yours, Ha Ha! How do we know you completed the entire course???
Happy Birthday Shannon, you look good on that bike.
Beth - You won the Tri-Buddie trophy this event, with a winning time of 2:20:03.
Please email me the video of my finish, that was very special, thanks. (dmadden6@aol.com)
Michaelle - You came in third after Chuck, that is if Chuck really did the entire course, that means you were in the top half of the Tri-Buddie results. Thanks for giving me the shirt off your back when I started to shiver.
OK, I admit it was a very difficult course. I signed up for the event because I wanted to do a Half Ironman before going to Lake Placid in July to register. I wanted to know if I could do a half before signing up for a full Ironman. You all made it a very special event when you joined me, thanks again.
Hello again. After downloading my Garmin to the computer I discovered my top speed was 50 mph at mile 30, on popcorn road, that would have been mile 4 during the first loop. My slowest speed was 3.3 mph climbing the second to last hill when my legs cramped.
You rocked yesterday Dave... =) Congratulations on not only completing a half-iron, but Black Bear!! 50mph... I can only imagine Placid! I think your 3.3 with cramps on the last hill was still faster than my climb there... as Bernadette mentioned to me... I swore the gypsy moth catapillers were moving faster than me!
Great job everyone! Dave - I am so impressed with your half ironman! You did it and you had a great time! I don't know how to use my computer on my bike but it would have been funny to see how slow I was going up that last hill...weaving left and right just to make it up without falling over on my bike! I don't know what I topped out at but it might have been 40 mph.
I am TIRED today!
Once I download the pictures, I will send them to everyone!
Shannon - not sure about the 14th, but I'll let you know.
p.s. Shelley - I'll bring your spoon (again) the next time I see you!
And Shannon - way to go! Completing a race with a sprained ankle on your birthday all while trying to keep some personal space between you and Paul! Good job!
Went to see the PT at Penn today... was told that I can continue to run with it taped/ankle brace as long as I don't mind the soreness... just swollen and bruised... which matches my random knee bruises I have... so weird. Since the initial twist was due to clearly not watching where I was walking... pride definitely took over and I couldn't not finish because of being a klutz... =)
Thanks for hanging with me on my birthday... I had a great day... hills and all! =) I loved the card.
We may have looked drunk and stupid weaving Beth... but we got up it... AND I think coming to a complete stop and falling over would have looked worse!
i completely agree!
Dave-It says in the official results that I completed the race. If it is on the internet, it has to be true. Congratulations to all the team. For a little perspective...
When I went out to find Dave, I passed a group of adults playing...kickball. A serious game in which people had marked out the base paths and team colored mesh vests. Maggie can play kickball. It takes guts, discipline and focus to practice, train, learn and finish a triathlon. Always be proud of your accomplishments, no matter what the time you crossed the finish line or how you placed.
Dave-if you are doing Lake Placid next year, then I will be there with a cold beer in hand screaming at you to suck it up.
I think I'll be there, too...drinking a light beer and ringing my cow bell when you go by! I should try to get the time share now! What weekend is that??
Beth... you definitely should get that time share now... =)
Chuck... I like you kickball comparison... =)
PS: Dave... I too will be cheering my heart out for you in Placid... and we already made a date for Florida in November... you'll finish enough ahead of me that you can return the cheering favor... =)
Just finished reading the post-Black Bear race reports from T3 and in along the same line of Chuck's message... I am stealing my new favorite line...
"Its not about where you finish at the end, its about the fun experiences you have with your buddies along the way."
Dave, you were awesome - and probably still are. It was an honor to witness your first half iron, and I look forward to Placid. Your focus and dedication were evident. You were so prepared that I've been inspired to think - not next year, but maybe the year after...never mind!!
I feel like such a slacker, not posting yesterday. But for some reason the site wouldn't come up at work. So I spent the rest of the morning downloading and reformatting race results and signing up for more sprints: Philly Women's, Marlton & Kings Grant. I'm waiting until my credit card billing cycle ends to sign up for sherox - $120!!! And NJ Sprint has sold out, so need another race.
Any ideas for a September Olympic?
A co-worker just told me about this race: www.20in24.com. It benefits some great cause. There is a midnight run as well as relay option. The lone ranger involves as many loops around Fairmount Park as one can do in 24 hours...
It all involves running the 8.5 from Lloyd Hall around and back to Lloyd Hall.
You must have already gone to bed on Saturday night Michaelle cause we talked about the 20in24 race during the hockey game. You are away that weekend aren't you Beth? It is July 19th & 20th... we talked about the Gold relay... which would mean the five people relay team would each run 3 loops...obviously not consectively (leaving us a little time at the end for possibly another loop as a group)... we would have to maintain 11min miles. We could also sign up for one of the lower level options and keep running... which I guess sorta defeats the purpose of the fundraising.
When I get back home, I am going to sign up for Marlton Lakes and Kings Grant. There is an Endurancesport tri at Nox lake in Sept. I believe that one is an Olympic and Half with a long bike ride around hills.
Do you mean Steelman? That's August 10th I think...
Hi all,
Shannon loved the quote. Take it from one who is always near the last to finish I appreciated it. How and when did you hurt your ankle? Your are a inspiration competing while injured.
Shelley, way to use that credit card. So you are doing Philly women?
Beth, Weaving or not you made it up those hills and that is awesome
Chuck, Split times or not you finished and that is great. Did you have to pay $25 for it? Liked the kick ball story. Can we do a kick ball tournament instead of Black Bear next year?
Dave, I am so proud of you. Great time, great effort and Great body. Oops did I say that out loud,
Thanks to all for getting me to the finish line and hanging around to cheer for Dave.
And to all of us, we make a great team
Three cheers for us
It is on the genesis adventures website. Click on Triathlons and you will see the Endurasports Pennsylvania "The Quakerman".
Yes - I'll be away the weekend of the 20 in 24. While you folks are running the loop, I'll be weaving my own basket. :)
I'm uploading the pictures and video to shutterfly and snapfish right now. You can pick whichever site you prefer. So if you get emails from either, you'll know why. Dave - I'm going to try to email the video to you. If it doesn't work, then I'll just burn it onto a CD. I apologize that all you'll really hear is me screaming "Woooo" in the video.
I'm going to sign up for Marlton Lakes tonight, too. I have to talk to Eric about the Philly Women's tri (solo) and SheRox (relay)...we'll see if he minds missing me for a few days.
Just looked at th Quakerman race on the website... what a weird race... it's called an Olympic distance... but the swim is short (.6 miles instead of .9)... long bike ride (38.2miles) and the same run (6.2miles)... crazy! I remembered friends doing the Annapolis Maryland Olympic triathlon in September... was supposed to be great, but it sells out kinda quick.
There is also a great race (from what I hear) at the end of September...Cape Henlopen in Lewes, DE. I want to do it but it's too close to the wedding.
I got the OK for both women's tri's. I can volunteer the day before the Philly Women's tri, too. Eric will be on his annual canoeing trip with the boys (which is a lot like a drunken beer fest with the only difference being that they are floating in canoes)... good stuff.
OK - I'm going to go do some damage by signing up for Marlton and the women's race. Although I just looked at how much SheRox is and that might deter me from doing it! It's $190 for the relay! $63 is a lot to run a 5K!
Shannon, Do you know if the technical T is free if you are a member of a club for the women's tri.
How many times can one person post in a night?
...I just registered for the Philly Women's Race, Marlton Lakes, and T3. I'm in a club now. Woooohoooo!
I thought we were a club. What does T3 have on the Philly TNT Tri '07 club or Tri-Buddies or ???, what do we call ourselves? I guess T3 has a cool name. What does T3 offer for the membership? I guess there is a website with more information.
I am so disappointed, I will also be away during the 20in24 at Lake Placid. My volunteer duties will be bike handeler.
Hey Dave - T3 has nothing on us! I was thinking about it yesterday...I only joined for free stuff and discounts! I'm hoping that I could potentially get the tech shirt for the philly women's tri for free. (since people at black bear got it free for being in a club)
I was also thinking that we could really be our own club. I have a blue tent and everything! ...although it's a pain in the arse to lug that thing around. It's bad enough I have that awesome grill I take everywhere. I think I'm going to look into a carrying case for that thing...maybe it'll make it easier to lug.
I'm glad you liked the video! It took forever to download it and I have comcast...so I hope it didn't take too long for you to view it!
Is anyone up for a run tomorrow night? I am tentative right now - we might have to meet with the church to sign some official papers and we're not sure when that will be yet.
I should probably do some work today!
Hey, I won 4 tickets to the VIP stands for the race! It includes access to the shuttle between the grand stands and the Manyunk wall. Anyone interested in going with me?
hey gang - I'm thinking of buying some tri magnets online. if anyone is interested, we could split the shipping. They are $5. Check out the website and let me know if you're interested!

p.s. I wish I could go with you Shelly! I have too much to do. Have a great time!
In answer to your ankle ? Bernadette.... when I was heading out of transition to get body marked and down to the water for the practice swim... I stepped in a small hole/divot and twisted it...while I would love to say it was because of the extra weight of carrying a cliff bar, body glide, two xtra wetsuits, swim caps and goggles... the real reason is being a klutz combined with ankles that like to twist. =) I was thankful I didn't completely wipe out and look like a total loser... that would have been funny... yet sad! =)
Hey Shannon, thanks for carrying my wetsuit, swim cap and goggles around before the race. I didn't want to overwork my arms.
I am running on thursday night.
No problem... I probably should have carried that stuff plus you and Beth down to the water in order to save your arms AND legs...
Michaelle - Bernadette and I are going to bike the route during the day, as I explained in an earlier blog but when we come back to the parkway we could use the VIP tickets to get good finish line seats if you don't have any other takers that would benefit more.
I like the idea of the VIP seats for beginning and end of race... that way we can get the action at Lemon Hill too...
I'm in for the run tonight at 6 pm but I don't think I'll be doing 6 miles. Eric and I have an 8 pm meeting in Phoenixville so I need to be home and showered in time to go.
I'm going to let my people know that we're meeting if anyone wants to come.
I'm gonna miss you guys tonight... swimming and running in Wenonah...
I feel so unloved. No Shannon. None of my mentees! Ugh...
Little did they know that I am going to donate towards their fundraising goal if they show up tonight!
