Mentors (and friends)

It was great to see so many of my training buddies at the mentor meeting last night. It should make this upcoming tri season fun and I am looking forward to continue what were were doing last summer/fall.

Look at your calendars to see if you are available to gather for a post-holiday drink since it has been so long. I would like to talk about how as mentors we can work together and would like suggestions from those that plan on participate again how to make the mentoring experience work better for the TNTer's. So even if you are just participating, I hope that you can make it out too.

I will suggest January 3rd at a location to be determined . Post your RSVP or comments here. If I don't speak to you before, I wish you all a Merry Christmas.

Back from Disney

Bruce the Shark did not eat us, so we made it back from Disney World in one piece. The girls had a great time seeing all the princesses. I think we only saw about 10% of everything Disney World had to offer. I think next time we will find someone (ie, grandparent) to come along too so that Chuck can ride some big boy rides too!
Now that the my trip to the land of make believe is over, the reality of training again has kicked in. These past 2 months have been tough (busy) at work and have had me on the road alot, which has made any training non-existent. I am, however, ready to get back on the "horse" and start again. I think pushing 80 pounds around for 8 hours a day this past week was a good start and will be something that I will be building off. I too am having knee/shoulder soreness that I am trying to work through. I am heading to the gym today to shake off the rust. I look forward to getting together with the team here in the next couple of weeks to talk stategery for the 2008 triathlon season.

Hello Everyone, Soccer season is finally over. The LCHS Girls JV Soccer Team picture is shown. My son Brian (assistant coach) is on the left side of the team. I am on the right if you forget what I look like. The girls where introduced to running on the first day of practice (2.2 miles). Half the team had to walk the last mile and two girls dropped so far off the rear I lost them for a few minutes. I don't think the school administration would have been happy with me if I didn't find them. By the end of the season the entire team was looking forward to our runs and our fitness was the best in the league. Many of our games were tied at half time and won in the second half. Well, as you can see on the picture we had a very successful season. My eighteen adopted daughters were sad to see the end of the season. I also assign referees to games and I and my sons refereed games on the weekends. Last week my sons and I refereed 20 soccer games on Friday, Saturday and Sunday at the Deep Run Turkey Bowl Soccer Tournament, that was 20 hours of running, stopping, starting, cutting, turning and sprinting. I felt good enough to go swimming on Monday night.
Bernadette and I were biking when the weather was nice and recently spinning at the Health Club three times a week. I have started swimming again trying to improve my stoke for next years triathlons. I will be doing the Philadelphia Triathlon with TNT again (third year). I am also already signed up for the Lehigh Valley Half Marathon on April 27 (including pasta dinner on Saturday night) and the Timberman Half Ironman on August 17. I am looking for a Half Ironman in May or June. I am having some issues with my right knee but I hope it will just go away. Those things do that don't they? Hope to see you all soon. Dave

Pulling the Trigger... or Pressing Submit

Rumor has it that 3 people signed for the Philly tri to night... crazy, huh! Signing up for two triathlons in one day... I must be needing some quality t-shirts!

Deirdre has landed

Not sure you've all known, but I was with Exelon Corporation when you met me, was a contractor at Siemens Medical this summer, and recently landed what I call - a "real job".

First, I accepted the Manager of Organizational Development & Training position at Acme Corporate office in Wayne, PA. Don't get excited, no food discount because........ well I'm going.
I will call next week and tell them - just KIDDING - I'm not coming! (ouch, ugly not looking forward to that call)

What??

SEI in Oaks, PA offered me a "position" (they don't have titles, see this month's Philly Magazine). I strongly believe in taking the best of people's potential and love companies that are creative, flexible and appreciate their employees - well, though I can't believe I made the decision on Acme then renig'd on a job with a great title, I'm really happy with my decision. Plus SEI's off the perkiomen creek, has a gym, a month vacation and has flexible work schedules!

I'm starting after "Tofurkey Day" (which is what we veggies call the holiday) on 11/26.
Wish me rots-r-ruck!

Good luck Nicole!

Good luck on Sunday! Is anyone else running this weekend?

Jingle Bell 5K

Is anyone interested in doing this? It's on Sunday, December 9th in Malvern, PA.

Cool Run...

It was great seeing Nicole yesterday at the Dash for Democracy 5K... as she blew my doors away!! =) She definitely looks ready for the half marathon in just a couple of weeks. The Run the Bridge 10K was GREAT today... I recommend people run it next year.... the Ben Franklin is fun to run over... I couldn't believe it was 3+miles for just the bridge... the incline on the bridge is no fun, but goes by quick. I also think the fact that there were 3,500+ people on the bridge made it more enjoyable... are people still planning on running the 8K on Nov. 18? Let me know....

Happy Halloween

I hope that everyone is in the spirit on Wednesday. I will be out walking with Sleeping Beauty and either a lion, Jasmine or Spiderman (gametime decision). Can someone give me the contact at TNT about the mentoring program? I tried to email someone from the website and got it kicked back.

TNT Mentoring

As of last week Shannon "spoke with Amy Rivera (she is the new staff person for triathlons and century rides)... basically the mentors are supposed to support and help with fundraising (along with general support) of TNT folks... it involves some random paperwork, checking in with folks, encouraging etc. As a mentor you can fundraise (which gives you the opportunity to participate just like we did last year... $ covered etc) or not fundraise (which means if you want to do the event, you have to register, pay to get there etc). You have to attend meetings to recruit people... (ie: the meeting on 10/22)... the meetings that are happening now are just for spring season... which means the ONLY triathlon event is St.Anthony's. Philly and hopefully a half-event will happen during summer meetings which start in the winter sometime."

So the no fundraise mentor option means that you do the event on your own but get to train with the team? That does not seem to be all that difficult but would like to ask Ms. Rivera some additional questions. Can you send along her contact information?

Spent a nice weekend in the mountains. Did some hiking, but mostly did a lot of eating and sitting around and fishing. It was great.

Crash and Burn

Yeah... Bernadette is back on the blog! Glad to hear the MS150 went well. How was the 5K today? My swim today at the triathlon went great... almost 12min faster than philly AND no current (phew... i did miss the shorter swim about a halfway into the mile swim ) The 18-19 miles on the bike were also great...took me a little over an hour... BEFORE... crashing over my handle bars onto the road/ditch. =( I tried to walk the last 6 miles, but was pulled. I have road rash from elbow to hand... and on leg...the worse part is my left shoulder was separated (collar bone is angry too) Obviuosly never made it to the run. OWELL!!

TNT is about to kick off St.A's training-- which is on April 27th.... even though i must become a runner 4 that silly half marathon... a bike ride would be fun...meeting for beer &food would be too!!!

Upcoming Running Events in Philly

Here are four cool runs coming up... since we are ALL such lovers of running... figured everyone would want the information... =) Let me know if anyone plans on doing one (or all of them)...

1) 10TH ANNUAL GREAT EASTERN STATE BREAKOUT RUN 5K... October 13, 2007. Looking for a great flat and fast course then this is the race for you. It will take you through the Fairmount Area ending at the East State Penitentiary. All participants can enjoy a post race breakfast & loads of giveaways. Who knows maybe you'll even win one of their cool awards!

This race is run by one of CGI's favorite volunteer groups ~ The Fairmount Running Club -www.fairmountrunningclub.googlepages.com
For more details visit ourpark.org.

2) Philly AIDS Walk(12K) or Run (10K) on October 21st...checkout http://www.aidswalkphilly.org/AIDSWalkPhilly.aspx

3)
Dash for Democracy - a 5k here in Philly on Nov. 3rd.

(
Nicole has a group of friends running as a team... maybe we could join that team or start another one)

4) Philly Marathon/Half-Marathon and 8K on Nov. 18th....(I am most likely running the 8K... but playing with the idea of running/walking the half in preparation for the half I am running in February

Happy tidings for the 1st week of October

Congratulations to Beth on her engagement. Eric had mentioned at the Marlton Lakes Tri that he had gotten you a ring and was thinking of proposing during your vacation.

Congratulations to those that participated in the MS150 this weekend. I look forward to hearing how the ride went and hope that everyone made it there and back.

I am sorry that I did not follow up on Saturday's ride/run. It has been a bit busy with work and the girls birthday that I have lost track of my exercise routine. The hard part of getting together during the week has been the declining sunlight. Meeting this time of year at 6:45 or 7pm means running in the dark. I know that most of you are getting out there closer to your homebase so if anything, please keep us informed as to what you are doing. I know for myself seeing that you all are still motivated keeps me in the game too. If someone else has suggestions as to how/where/when we can meet, please post it.

I am supposed to run in the Conshy 5k on Saturday morning. I don't know who all is going to participate, but I hope to see most of you then. I am heading to the Poconos for some much needed R&R the following weekend.

As requested, please note the more positive post title for this week...

Grumblings for the week of September 30th

Hello all!

I got an email from Bernadette & Dave looking for a place to stay in/near Ocean City, NJ for Saturday during the MS 150. Bernadette is having problems posting, so here is what she wrote...

"We lost the place we were staying at on September 29th in Ocean City NJ. Do you know of anyone who has a place we can sleep for the night of the 29th? Can you forward this to our other tri buddies since I don't have anyone else's email."

Let talk about trying to workout on Saturday morning, if possible. Since we are no longer outdoor swimming, I would suggest that we could meet at the Spring Mill parking lot (it is bigger than the snack hut) to start a run/bike. Friday night is my girls big birthday party (Theme: princesses) so I might on a bit of a sugar high Saturday morning...

Marlton Tri Pictures

Dave forwarded these to post on the blog. What a motley crew! My those burgers were quite tasty.

Grumblings and rumblings for September 17-23, 2007

Good day all! I hope that you were able to get out and enjoy the weekend's great weather. I apologize for not getting back to you all about this past Saturday's discussed workout, but I was out in Idaho for a meeting and did not get back until Saturday morning. Curious to know what Idaho looks like? Here is a picture.

Okay, that isn't really a picture of Idaho but of me golfing in St. Kitts when I took a vacation 3 years ago. Here is a picture of Idaho.

Not really all that exciting. As for this week's workout schedule, it does not look like I will be able to participate. I am leaving tomorrow for meetings in Rhode Island, I have an event on Thursday and plans for Saturday and Sunday mornings.

I know that there are a couple of people running in the Conshohocken FunFest 5k (http://www.conshyfunfest.com/). Continue to post items that you are planning to participate in/want to do so it gives slacker like me something to train for.

5K Charity Run

Below is information for a 5K charity run that CGI Racing (the folks who put on the Thursday night swims and a bunch of the local triathlons... Philadelphia Women's Tri included)... I think it would be a great thing to participate in... considering how we all got our start with triathlons etc. I am going to checking my calendar and if it is free... I plan on running in it. I know that it is the weekend of the MS 150... but maybe the non-MS 150 folks would like to run with me. Pass along to friends as well.

.... In March of 2006 a 9 year old boy (Bradley Caraker) in lost his battle with Leukemia. As you may know, Wenonah is a very small town and we are all like family. Larry and I coordinate a 5k run “Bradley’s Buddies” for the family – all proceeds benefit Tcell research. The event this year is on September 30th at 9:00 am through Wenonah (which is a great run). If you can join us we would really appreciate it! If not, please pass the info along to anyone you think might want to join us...there is a 1K walk as well. You can register a number of ways – 1. online at www.bradleysbuddies.org , 2. At the Harvest Fair on 9/22 (Wenonah Park) 3. Race day from 8:00 – 8:45 am. Hope to see you there!

Ramblings for the week of September 10th-16th, 2007

Hello all! I hope that everyone had a great weekend. Kudos to Shannon for the excellent news of her TriTrip to North Carolina. It's good to know that she wasn't cursing out the her fellow participants.

The Art Cycle ride was hard but a lot of fun. I am glad that I got my brother out to join in and congratulations to Bernadette for going the 38 mi. course instead of the 20 mi. course. Apparently some jokesters decided to paint over one of the direction notices on the course, so instead of doing 38 miles, we (and a lot of other people) did 41.5 mi. I think that the last 4 miles were all up hill. One of the items in the freebie bag was a clip-on lip balm holder. When exactly is one supposed to use this?

I am trying to run on Monday and Wednesday of this week. Let me know in that post if you can attend. Also, are there any organized bike rides out there for this coming Saturday morning that you all are aware of?

Ramble on...

Surving Tropical Storm Gabrielle!!

Greetings from North Carolina!! You all would be proud of me... I held my own and represented the TNT Philly posse well down here at the triathlon!! =) The course was amazing and the weather held up despite the looming tropical storm threatening the great state of North Carolina. I definitely understand why the location is prime for a half-iron. The lake was crystal clear... the whole swim you could see the sand bottom. A couple rolling hills on both run and bike, but pretty flat. The exciting news is that I cut 23 minutes off my SheRox time... the race was the exact same distance (800m swim, 15 mile bike and 3.1 mile run)... finishing at 2hrs and 7minutes. More importantly... NO FLAT TIRES!!! And the bike travelled perfect on the plane... bike case was great... taking the bike apart and putting back together was EASY!!! Hopefully will work out the same way going home. Also, I have added aero bars to the bike and they were much fun to ride on... didn't get the stiff shoulders or anything. =)

Hope everyone who did a ride today rocked out and had fun in Philadelphia... good weather. See everyone soon...

I'm planning on doing the 63 mile Art Cycle ride, then walk over and watch the Univest Criterium.

Ramblings for the week of September 3-9, 2007

Hello all! Congratulations to all whom competed in the Marlton Lakes Tri. After the race, while Dave was cooking hamburgers (Nice!) on Beth grill (Nice!) and in between stories of Shannon's cursing at random people along the course (Nice?), we talked about having one post per week for random chatter and the rest of the postings for noting different events. Here you go, ramble away...

Greetings from 103 degree NC

Hello... I have missed my TNT buddies while away in NC helping my parents settle into their new house. While living on a lake and having a pool and boat are great... the oppressive heat and LARGE hills have made training a true joy (NOT!)... thankfully my dad can drive after me in the golf cart and yell 'encouraging' things my way. I checked out the triathlon course for the Diva Dash sprint I am in doing on 9/9 here in NC and the olympic distance course on 10/6... both are AMAZING... beautiful and practically hill-less. The two lakes are crystal clear with sand bottoms-- unlike Wenonah and the nasty Marlton lakes. The site for the all women sprint on 9/9 is actually the same location that they do a half-iron in spring... rated one of the top 3 events for beginners.. and now I know why. I am seriously considering doing the half-iron on this course-- depends on how the half-marathon in february goes.

If anyone is up for a long distance trip to NC for either of the two races this fall, let me know. Also, I am doing the National Breast Cancer half-marathon in February... Jacksonville, Florida ( wouldn't be ready for Philly by Nov)... so if anyone is up for that- there are a couple of us from Philly doing the race and would love more stupid (err.. I mean motivated) folks.

Are we biking and swimming this Saturday? Hope so... can someone send me a confirmation email about Saturday... I will be back from NC on either Thursday late or Friday. I can drive folks from Philly (Michaelle and Nicole if people are going)...

-Shannon

Sprint on LBI in September

If anyone else is interested, Shannon, Michaelle, and I are doing the Endless Summer Sprint Tri in Beach Haven on Long Beach Island. We are inching our way from river to ocean with the swim taking place in the bay. It's on 09/23. Come join!

What is the date and where can I find the info / directions etc?
Is it really on Labor Day weekend?

Swimming August 25

Hi all Dave and I are up for swimming on Saturday but since we have our ride on Sunday we aren't going to bike. Let us know if you are all getting together for our usual Saturday morning bike/swim. Is any one doing the MS 150 bike ride?

Swimming on August 25

Hi all. Dave and I would be up for swimming on saturday but with the Live Stong Challenge on Sunday we don't want to ride. If you all are getting together let us know. We can meet you for the swim.

Working out during the week of August 19-25

I don't know what everyone else's schedule is like for next week, but I would like to run at least twice and bike/swim on Saturday. I prefer to run on Tuesday and Thursday evenings as I have childcare available. I ran last night down along the trail in Conshy and after Spring Mill it smelled like something was dead in the woods. I don't know if it always smells like this or I just happen to catch it on a good night. So if someone would rather meet at a different location which they think is a better run (and finishes near a watering hole), I am all game.

If you would all like to come up to my neck of the woods, I can map out a course near Wings Field (http://www.wingsfld.com/) where I am a member of the club there (I am sure I will be mocked for this). It has an outdoor (unheated) pool and full service bar and outdoor dining area.

We can also still meet at the train station. Whichever works best for all interested.

The Saturday morning run can be the same as it has been. Does an 8AM or 9AM time work better for everyone?

Have a great weekend and I hope to see you all during the week. You people are what keep me motivated to workout. Let on my own, I would be sitting on my couch eat donuts and Stacy's Pita Chips.

Need some motivation?

Me, too!

Will anyone be running this Thursday at 6:30 pm at Conshohocken?

Cleaning Goggles

My goggles are really starting to fog up and the spit method just does seem to last for very long. Any suggestions?

Thanks Beth

It was great to hear from you. We can't wait to see everyone. We just signed up for the philly marathon in November. Anyone else??
